Instagram is a brilliant app if you are looking at starting and growing your business. The best thing about it is that it is free to use, and if you are dedicated to it, you can grow your business in leaps and bounds.

Instagram, for us, has been the proverbial goose that lays the golden eggs. It’s a gift that keeps on giving and we are really thankful that a big chunk of our orders and bookings are as a result of this app.

It is estimated that Instagram has well over 1 billion users and it keeps growing by the hour. So, if you are looking at growing your small business here are a few tips that you can put in place:

  1. Set up a FREE Business Account

If you are already on Instagram, I would recommend that you change your account from a personal account to a business account. This is how to do it

The business account will enable you to add relevant business information, such as opening hours, business address, phone number, and a link to your website.


Profile photo

Simplicity works. I recommend using your business’s logo or a graphic symbol. Your image will be cropped into a circle and appear as a small 150 x 150-pixel icon.

Account name

Choose an account name, ideally your business name, that’s easily tied to your brand. Keep it short. The limit for usernames is 30 characters e.g. @gikombandogo


Create a short description of your business. You can include relevant hashtags to make your business more discoverable or add emojis to describe it visually.

Website and contact options

Help people get in touch with your business by adding your website, email, phone number and location.

3. FOLLOW @instagramforbusiness

@instagramforbusiness will give you the latest tips & insights on how to grow your business and you will be able to learn a lot on how to harness and maximize Instagram in order to grow your small business.

4. The More the Merrier

I discovered that the more I posted, the more my engagement and client bookings went up. A gap of about 2 hours between posts worked well for me. And I typically posted more afternoon-evening (4 pm-10 pm) as this was when my posts got the most views. We will cover this on understanding insights later.

5. Plan Ahead

At the beginning of every week map & plan out the posts that you are going to share during that week. If you can be able to come up with the content and captions that are needed it can be great. The planning will also give you time to come up with fun and interesting ideas to share with your followers. Remember that in order for instagram to work for your business you have to invest the time.

6. Content is KING

Content is everything! Remember that you have utmost 10 milliseconds to catch the attention of your scrolling followers. Your content has to stand out from the crowd. It must be BOLD & COMPELLING. Instagram is about pictures, here are some tips to take your content to the next level

a) Invest in good professional images of your product/service

b) Good lighting is a must, avoid crappy, low lit images

c) BOLD is the word. Remember, the image must be so good that your followers would want to scroll up.

d) Avoid repetition and predictability. Have fun while at it.

7. Consistency Beats Creativity

I realized that if you need more engagement and want to grow your business then consistency is everything when it comes to Instagram. I tried doing the random creative posts but my engagement was very low. Though the more I stuck to a schedule & a routine; the bookings & inquiries skyrocketed. If you get too busy during the day, I would recommend setting reminders on your phone or investing in a 3rd party schedular like Hootsuite. Though unfortunately, the cheapest plan is about $49/month. To start with just put reminders on your phone.

8. Interaction is Everything

Interact with your customers. Don’t be those aloof brands who are out of touch with reality. Be human, be fun, be authentic. Create posts & stories where you share your journey, your victories, your ups, and downs. That is the advantage of being a small business. The human interaction. Remember this, PEOPLE DO BUSINESS WITH PEOPLE THAT THEY LIKE AND TRUST!

9. Respond

One of the ways that Instagram will show your content to a wider audience is if you take the time to respond to all your customer inquiries. This includes comments & DMs. Respond to everything even if it’s just an emoji 😂😂😂😂. This is one of the easiest & surest ways to get your account verified (The blue tick)

10. Create a call to action

If you’re promoting a post or creating an ad on Instagram, include a clear call to action to advance your business goal. Like CALL NOW or DM NOW to book. Never leave a post hanging
