Glory be to God friends, allow me to share a little lesson that God has been teaching Gathoni & I of late. This, I pray will be a blessing to you too. All of us, (Especially living through a Pandemic) are all looking to do one thing. Make a living. And making a decent one while at it.
This has been in my mind a lot for the last two years as businesses have gone down and many have lost their livelihood. We asked God a lot, especially what we were doing wrong, as we always seemed to need more money than we could make. That is when God led us back to the life of Jesus, and asked us to spend some time in studying his mission. What was it that Jesus spent his whole entire life doing?, what did He emphasise in His teaching? What was He so keen to teach his followers right before his death?
The answer is much known but little used term. “SERVE”.
Jesus lived his life by the mantra
“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:45
More bible verses
“Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.” 1 Peter 4:10
That’s it, folks. That was what God was trying to teach Gathoni & I all through 2019 & 2020, as the economy and the pandemic ravished our livelihood. We were just focused on getting, getting, getting. All what we were thinking of was, “What is in it for me?” we lived a selfish life, focussed on ourselves and what amount of money we could make out of a situation or deal. Jesus lived his life Serving Humanity. That is all He did, that was his drive, what He woke up everyday for, TO SERVE. That is the little secret of success fam. Find a way to serve.
As I was thinking and researching more about this Biblical Principle, I came across this
SERVICE —-> SIGNIFICANCE ——-> SUCCESS
Take a look at all the great business leaders we have today, Elon Musk (Tesla & SpaceX), Mark Zuckerberg (FB, IG & Whatsapp), Bill Gates (Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation), Jeff Bezos (Amazon), Larry Page (Google) and the list goes on & on. All these individuals made their wealth & significance in different fields, but if you study their biographies, you will find one thing in common with all of them. All of them SERVE. All these individuals have a burning driving force behind them, how can I help? How can I serve, How can I make the life of humanity better? That is the secret friends, Service. The secret to lasting & meaningful success is SERVICE. Guys please focus on this term “Meaning“. Success without “Meaning” is empty.
This to me was not making sense. How am I going to make money if I just focus on serving others? How will I pay my bills? What about school fees? Rent? those issues are real? How was I going to do it?
And that is when God reminded me of this truth.
“Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward, and that the Master you are serving is Christ.” Colossians 3:23-24
Wow, isn’t that verse so amazing!!! This is what Gathoni & I clearly felt in our heart of hearts. That if we work solely in order to get paid or a get commission, then we have received our reward in FULL. God owes us nothing!!!! The reward is paid in Full.
But, if we serve, honestly going out of our way help others, and put their needs before our own, then God himself will be the one to Reward us. He is going to give us back what we have sown in service to others. Though mark this, not in the same amount we ‘Invested’ in others. The bible reminds us that He will give it back to us, pressed down, shaken together & running over. And the interesting thing is that, even though all this Billionaires may not believe in God, the principle (Fundamental truth or LAW) still applies. Because they focused on Serving others, God gave them their reward in FULL.
Amazing right? Here, Jesus reminds us that God will cause men to give into your bossom (Unto you). That is the payout, the REWARD. God will cause men to give unto you! That friends is not just money but WEALTH. Long lasting, generational WEALTH. The good kind, the kind that you get a good night sleep over. Since you are not just making money, but most importantly, you are making a difference in people’s life.
So, my friends, that is the lesson. Simple & Straightforward. Find a way to SERVE. Whether you are employed, working your hustle or just stuck waiting in between. You can serve. All of us can be GREAT, because all of us can SERVE. So throw away that Financial Plan/Goal, that you have, roll up your sleeves and start asking folks around you, “How can I help?“
Allow me to end this post with a story about this great man. Boker T Washington.
One day Booker was walking down the street dressed smartly as he always did. As he was passing by one of the houses, an old lady called out to him. “Hey, young man, come here” Booker walked to her and greeted her. ”Good day ma’am, how can I help you?” The old lady told Booker that she had some wood in the back that needed to be cut. Booker walked in the house, removed his coat & bow tie, rolled up his sleeves and proceeded to cut up the firewood in her back yard. It was a lot of wood. Once he was done, the old lady asked him to put some in her fireplace as she was cold. Once done, the old lady asked Booker how much she owed him, and that is when Booker famously replied…
“You owe me nothing ma’am, it was an honour to serve you“
And at this, he took his coat, slung it up his shoulder and walked away. That is when the maid of the old lady (Who was black) went to her and told her. “Ma’am, don’t you know who that man is?” “No” she replied, “Who is he?“
“That is the famous Negro educator“, the maid replied. “His name is Booker T Washington”. The lady was astounded. “Is that so?“. She then asked her maid to run after him and call him back.
That lady invested millions of dollars in a school that he started called Tuskegee Institute, (Est 1881) that still stands until today. Booker, then went on to become one of the Wealthiest & most influential black men to come out of Slavery.
That is it folks, service. Just imagine how many opportunities we have passed by, just because of our own pride, selfishness & that monster that keeps whispering in our ears ‘What is in it for me‘. May God help us in our own way, find a way to Serve. I leave you with the good words of Jesus Christ…
