Gathoni & I just got fed up with being broke. We had long suffered enough and had learned our lesson! (I still wonder what is the point of brokenness! ….Anyway!)

Why was money eluding us so much, in spite of all our hard work? All that occupied our minds was MONEY and how much getting some more of it would change our lives. Not make us any happier, most definitely, but at least make the going a little bit more bearable. And so we started praying and petitioning God for an answer. How could the God who owned cattle on a thousand hills not sell at least 10 of them heifers and sort us out a good one?

On the other hand, peoples all around us were prospering. Riches were being dished out in buckets. All the while it by-passed us. Seemed like we didn’t get the memo that had been sent to the rich. We cried out to the Lord in frustration. Was the God that we served lesser than theirs? Why would the world want our God when He could not even sustain us, we, His so-called children?

We were fed up! We had just had about enough.

As always, God told us that our lack of money was not because God did not want to give us money or that there was not enough money for everyone, it was because we lacked wisdom. The Bible emphasizes that my people die because of a lack of knowledge.

‘My people’ here stands for people who belong to God. How could the sons of the wealthiest person on heaven & earth lack money? It was simple, there was something we did not know that kept us on the leeward side of wealth. Simply put, our lack of wealth was as a result of lack of wisdom.

God then placed this very interesting portion of scripture in our hearts

The Night of Failure

Simon Peter said, “I’m going fishing.” “We’ll come, too,” they all said. So they went out in the boat, but they caught nothing all night. At dawn, Jesus was standing on the beach, but the disciples couldn’t see who he was. He called out, “Fellows, have you caught any fish?” “No,” they replied. Then he said, “Throw out your net on the right-hand side of the boat, and you’ll get some!” So they did, and they couldn’t haul in the net because there were so many fish in it.

John 21:3-6

Basically, Gathoni & I, just like everybody else, had been working so hard to catch some fish (money). We spent many nights & days on our hustle (fishing). Trying to get some food on the table. The harder we worked, the rarer this precious commodity became. When we talked to our fellow fishermen (peers) in the sea, they all shared the same sentiment. Fish (money) was becoming rarer and rarer every day.

Some of the fishermen (peers) told us that they had spotted some wealthy fishermen with them big boats in the deep seas. They had big boats and humongous nets. They are the ones who were catching all the fish and leaving us here with nothing. And so we hated these big fishermen. They were the cause of all our trouble. The government should find a way of canceling their licenses and throwing these unscrupulous fishermen out of the sea.

We talked about fish (money) all day. Praying for it, desiring it, dreaming of it. To be honest we felt as if it had become our new god.

We Got Tired of Catching Nothing

Just like the disciples, Gathoni & I had gotten tired of the hustle. All we did was work so hard and catch nothing. That is when we decided to head back to the shore and look for Jesus. He seemed to be the one with all the answers. Interestingly, when we met Jesus and asked for some help, the reply was something we had not expected to hear.

1st and foremost, we thought that if we asked Jesus for help he would pull out his giant fishing net and give us some fish. Didn’t they say that all the fish in all the oceans belonged to Him? We did not want all the fish, maybe just 500 full-grown Tilapia that we could sell in the market for our livelihood 🙈🙊.

Unfortunately, Jesus did not give any fish! Instead, he gave us some information. He said that we should cast our nets on the right-hand side of the boat and there we would catch some fish.

This made Gathoni & me so angry. Hadn’t Jesus seen that we had been fishing in the same sea night after night and caught nothing? Besides, why was He telling us to cast our nets just next to the beach? Who does that? All the serious-looking fish are caught deep in the seas. This Jesus was not making any sense. All we needed was fish! FISH! Jesus, we needed Fish 🐟🐠🎏🎣🐡, not some tired old idea that we had tried and had not worked.

The lesson in this portion of scripture is an incredible one. The bible also says this in Deuteronomy

But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ABILITY to produce wealth

Deuteronomy 8:8

The lesson that God was trying to teach Gathoni & me was that God never gives you Fish (Money/Wealth/Riches) he gives you ideas.

This is what Deuteronomy means by ability. This is knowledge, know-how, talent, & concepts so that you can go generate wealth for yourself. We were astounded.

So, the reason why we were not getting wealthy was simply because we were asking/praying a miss. This means that we were asking for the wrong thing. Jesus never gave the disciples fish. Instead, he had set up a fire expecting to get some from them for breakfast 😂😂😂😂 (This is a lesson for another day)

In spite of Him owning all the fish in the world, he did not give them fish. Instead, he gave them an idea, which when they implemented, gave them so much fish they needed help from other boats to haul in the catch. That is why God says that my people perish because of lack of knowledge. A lot of folk in the church are like Gathoni & Me. We pray, fast, intercede and ask God to bless us with money. All around us are people who do not even know God, living their best lives. While we, children of the King wallow in the miasma of poverty.

And so, we stopped praying for money, and now we only ask God to give us ideas, that will generate the wealth that we need. An idea to see opportunities where others see problems, to solve problems for other people & to be an answer to people’s prayers.

Remember that God never made clothes for Adam & Eve, he only gave them the idea that you can put some vines together to make clothes. Later they slaughtered a lamb and made clothes. God gave man the idea that a table can be made from a tree, soap from vegetable oil, and the like. That means God is in the ideas business & not in the money business. If you are in need of money today, stop crying to God to give you money, it will never happen bro. Ask Him to give you an idea, that will create that wealth for you.

When you look all around at Wealthy people, they are always discussing new ideas, that is why their biggest asset is their mind, not their bank account. If you take away all their wealth, they will build it back in 5 years. That is the power of ideas. Ideas will create for you generational wealth.

Think of Coca-Cola, Microsoft, Facebook, Bonfire Adventures, Safaricom et al. All these successful companies were started off by an idea.

God, the Giver of Ideas

The Bible in James says that every good and perfect gift comes from above. That is why we stopped praying for good ideas and now only ask for GOD ideas. Ideas that come from God are good and PERFECT. They will generate for you wealth that will last to your 3rd & 4th generation.

And the most wonderful thing is that it’s a GIFT. You do not have to earn it or work for it. Just ask Him and He will give it to you.
